Peatland farming without burning by the community
Forest and land fires occur almost every year in Riau Province, destroying peatlands. The impact of these fires is significant, including economic losses, health problems, and environmental damage. Riau Province itself has the largest peatland area on the island of Sumatra, covering approximately 4 million hectares, or 56% of the total peatland area in Sumatra. Much of the landscape between Giam Siak Kecil and Bukit Batu, as well as Bengkalis Island, is drained peatland, making it highly vulnerable to land and forest fires if there is a trigger for burning on the peatlands, such as agricultural activities.
